Join us to discuss new research on the values and experiences that unite Ukrainians after 30 years of independence.

Ukraine’s 30th ‘birthday’ is a great occasion to remind ourselves that independence is a work in progress. Over the past year, the Arena Programme, the Public Interest Journalism Lab and the Kharkiv Institute for Social Research have carried out focus groups with Ukrainians of different backgrounds across the country, including the occupied territories, to explore what people think of the key events of the last 30 years. The research found that Ukraine is more united than many assume, even on topics commonly thought to divide people. But there are still structural weaknesses that could make Ukraine’s democracy vulnerable moving forward.

Experts from the Arena research team will be joined by Orysia Lutsevych, head of the Ukraine Forum at Chatham House, for a discussion on how far Ukraine has come since 1991, how Ukrainian politics are transforming (or not) in parallel with Ukrainian society, and the biggest challenges for the country that lie ahead.

The Dnister Restaurant will be serving food before and after the event, so we can continue the discussion over varenyky and borscht!
